YouTube's global users now watch more than 1 billion hours of video every day, approaching the viewing time of US television. This is a milestone achieved through the Google division's extensive use of artificial intelligence to recommend videos. Nielsen data shows that Americans watch an average of about 1.25 billion hours of live and recorded television programmes per day, but this figure has continued to decline in recent years.
YouTube passed the above viewing-time mark at the end of last year, and the figure is more substantial than previously announced. The company says that the time users spend watching videos on YouTube has grown tenfold since 2012, when it had just begun building algorithms from user data, with the aim of recommending personalised videos to individual users so that they stay longer on YouTube.
The record also highlights the leading position of this 12-year-old platform in online video, and shows that it is posing a threat to traditional television, which lacks comparable cutting-edge tools.
