Nikon Files Patent for a 35mm f/2 Lens Designed for Curved-Sensor Cameras

Nikon has run into financial difficulties in recent years and is no longer the brand that could stand shoulder to shoulder with Canon. However, the company previously declared that it would release new mirrorless camera products with a certain level of competitiveness. Could its latest patent filing offer a clue?
The 35mm f/2 lens that Nikon has recently filed a patent for is rather special, because it is designed for a full-frame curved sensor. In theory, such a sensor can achieve a more even distribution of light, which reduces problems such as vignetting and loss of image quality at the edges, and the lens can also be made smaller. However, although the technology has started to emerge, ordinary lenses perform poorly on curved sensors, so new dedicated lenses are needed to bring out their advantages.
Nikon currently has no camera products that use a curved sensor, so this patent is very likely evidence that Nikon is developing a new camera line. If so, it would most likely be a new full-frame mirrorless line. Since a full set of full-frame mirrorless lenses would have to be launched from scratch anyway, there is no concern about adopting a curved sensor. Whether Nikon can regain its former glory with the new products, or will repeat the mistakes of the Nikon 1, remains to be seen.
