Nikon Files Patent for 35mm f/2 Lens Designed for Curved-Sensor Cameras

Nikon has run into financial difficulties in recent years and is no longer the brand that could stand on equal terms with Canon. Earlier, however, the company claimed it would release new mirrorless camera products with a certain level of competitiveness. Could its latest patent filing offer a few clues?
The 35mm f/2 lens Nikon recently filed a patent for is rather special, because it is designed for a full-frame curved sensor. In theory, such a sensor can achieve a more even distribution of light, which reduces problems such as vignetting and loss of image quality at the edges, and the lens can also be made smaller. However, although the technology has begun to emerge, ordinary lenses perform poorly when used on a curved sensor, so new dedicated lenses are needed to bring out its advantages.
Nikon currently has no camera products that use a curved sensor, so this patent is very likely evidence that Nikon is developing a new camera line. If so, it would most likely be a new full-frame mirrorless camera system. Since a full-frame mirrorless lens lineup would have to be launched from scratch anyway, there is no concern about adopting a curved sensor. Whether Nikon can regain its former glory with the new products, or will repeat the mistakes of the Nikon 1, remains to be seen.
